Ronia the Robber’s Daughter" by Ilon Wikland.

Ilon Wikland (born February 5, 1930 in Tartu, Estonia) is a Swedish artist and illustrator.  She is the artist who has illustrated the greatest number of Astrid Lindgren’s books.

I love these illustrations so much. Perfect art for a perfect book.

Astrid Lindgren is one of my absolute favourite children’s book writers, and of her books one of my ultimate loves is Ronja Rövardotter (1981, I read it in fantastic Dutch translation: Ronja de Roversdochter, translated as Ronia the Robber’s Daughter in English). It’s so beautifully done, full of feeling, humour, brilliant characterisation and tension, and with incredible illustrations by Ilon Wikland which could never be topped, only sighed dreamily at for their total perfection.
I wanted to experiment with painting something bigger and backgrounded in gouache, and Ronja fan art seemed like a nice way to try that! It’s not really what I was aiming for, and there’s a whole lot I’d like to do differently, but it was fun anyway, maybe I’ll have another go at some point. In the meantime, go and read Ronja, hide from enemies with her under dense pine branches, smile quietly at the stars, and cheer at her stubborn courage!
I recently watched Maleficent and really, really liked it. Brilliant performance by Angelina Jolie, plus transforming crow *___* <3

Hi and sorry for not having posted a while, my laptop broke, so I’m without all my stuff for a bit. Hope to put up more drawings really soon!

Home (watercolour).

My family moved between different countries ever since I was tiny, so the one constant home-place to me was the cottage we stayed in every summer, in the Yorkshire Dales. It always feels like a world away, but has reminders of the different places we lived, like Indonesia and Greece. Also the classic muddy boots + grumpy dog. (It rains a lot. Good excuse for cozy hearth-fires.) [The link above is to my wordpress blog where I write a little more]. Hope you’re having a great summer, wherever you are!

Pointless worrying. Thanks for the helpful advice there, floaty fox.
This was just waiting to happen ever since I got the gouache set. Inevitable U_U

Artist Interview: Simini Blocker

You may have noticed the wonderful profile pictures and the fabulous banner the blog has been sporting for a month or so now. Well, the artist is no other than Simini Blocker who also did the art for the special edition of Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park. Today, we have an interview with her conducted by the fabulous Yash.

It’s been pretty warm in the Dales, so the quest to soak the dog continues. Here are some of his splashing antics, heroic retrievals of sticks, tail-rudder-swimming techniques and stellar drying tricks. Also the infamous surprise galloping stick attack.

Hope you’re having a brilliant summer!

A little scrawly drawing of Kate from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. I’m kind of a wuss about horses anyway, so this great, moody take on kelpies was pretty (utterly) terrifying to me
